Accelerometer motion detection battery drain

Hello,

I am using the MMA8451Q accelerometer in a device and I want to check if that device is being used by someone. So I thought of using the accelerometer's motion detection to read and send an interrupt whenever the device moves. Before I get into the calibration and setting the bytes, I wanted to know if doing this would drain the battery. If this can be done, how long would a 100mAH battery last?

Thank you.

Best Regards.

Hello Ramesh,

Table 3 in the MMA8451Q data sheet summarizes the current consumption for different ODRs and operating modes. When using the low power mode and the lowest possible ODR of 1.56Hz, the current consumption is ~6uA, which corresponds to 694 days considering the 100mAH battery. Of course you have to also consider the current consumption of your MCU working ideally in some of the low power sleep modes.

Regards,

Tomas
