how do you specify flash type when booting form SD card? (u-boot; LS1021A)

I'm booting form a SD card on our LS1021A board but FLASH type does not appear to be specified by the RCW or the hard coded pullups on the IFC_AD signals. It appears its defaulting to serial flash..

I get "Bank # 1: missing or unknown FLASH type" when I type flinfo. Writes do not work and reads yield 0s.

The boot log says:

Using SERDES1 Protocol: 112 (0x70)
wait_for_sr_state: Arbitration lost sr=92 cr=0 state=2020
i2c_init_transfer: failed for chip 0x8 retry=0

i2c_init_transfer: failed for chip 0x8 retry=2
i2c_init_transfer: give up i2c_regs=0x2190000
The regulator (MC34VR500) does not exist. The device does not support deep sleep.
