SJA1110 SGMII MAC to MAC

Can someone confirm if the SJA1110 SGMII 2.5Gbps can be used in MAC to MAC mode? I am looking at connecting two SJA1110A back-to-back with the SGMII as the interconnect with fixed speed of 2.5Gbps.

Hello, is this MAC to MAC connection only possible on the SGMII ports? 

We are trying to connect port 2 of the SJA1110 to an MCU over RMII. (without a PHY) on the same PCB. We hooked up a REF_CLK at 25Mhz and setup the MCU to use this clock since it's usually the PHY providing this. 

Is this even possible? We've tried all the possible configurations on that port and no luck. 

Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated.

yes, it is possible to cascade two SJA1110 with the 2.5G SGMII interfaces. There is also an SJA1110 evaluation board with the exact same use case:
