By accurately modelling the i.MX 6, so that compiled code can be brought up on a Virtual Platform, great time savings can be made in a typical project design workflow, and a greater understanding of the available design space achieved. This paper looks at a multi-core Linux design, with a hosted application used to track the seabed depth, implemented on an X86 host. The design is simulated in near real-time, and detailed debug data is available both on the i.MX 6 and hosted software native-code application.

Multi-Core Embedded Frameworks are increasingly being used on NXP hardware to host RTOS, Linux and other proprietary operating systems. When it comes to debug, new tools are needed to allow step-by-step time-synchronized debug of individual cores, and their role in the overall system performance. This paper looks at Mentor Embedded Codebench, and the Sourcery Analyzer design debug options.

Building on top of 11 years of usage within data centers, Xen Hypervisor is uniquely placed to support a new range of use cases for embedded solutions. In particular, its isolation and security features, flexible virtualization modes and architecture, driver disaggregation, and strong ARM support make it a perfect fit for embedded applications. Artem Mygaiev, GlobalLogic’s Embedded Practice Head, will explore the virtualization nuances and challenges of using Xen Hypervisor for embedded applications through the demonstration of his own company’s journey in developing a platform that leverages Xen for virtual network equipment, IoT, automotive, and other embedded use cases.

Learn how Qt for Device Creation may be used to create advanced user interfaces in a few simple steps. Qt is a cross-platform C++ framework that offers tools to create modern and fluid user experiences. The Qt framework may utilize the OpenGL ES capable i.MX6 or perform simplified rendering for the new i.MX7. We will take a look at Qt and use Qt for Device Creation to develop a GUI application optimized for projects requiring low power and real-time tasks which are suitable for wide-range of industrial applications, while keeping advanced security features to be used in IoT applications—all with confidence and convenience. Attendees will discover how easily it is to enable a low power device with performant GUI effects. This evolution requires virtually no changes to the software or hardware -- made possible by the Qt Framework and standardized pin-compatible computer modules from Toradex.

Embedded system developers often have the impression that adding wireless connectivity to a device is a “black art,” only suitable to be performed by hardware and software wizards. We'll provide an overview of the challenges to overcome when building connected devices. We'll show how GainSpan wizards have made adding wireless connectivity to NXP-based MCUs an easy task suitable for any muggle. We will showcase GainSpan’s easy-to-use Wi-Fi modules and features of the built-in networking stack and services that take the difficulty out of adding wireless connectivity to an embedded design using NXP MCUs by demoing wireless connectivity using the Kinetis SDK, i.MX Application processor platforms and LPCXpresso-based development board. Audience will leave the session with the knowledge and motivation to get started on integrating wireless connectivity into their next NXP-based embedded design.

One particular wave of innovation in the world of ARM is an increase in heterogeneous CPU designs, where different classes of ARM processor are implemented on the same device. NXP are at the forefront of this wave. For example the i.MX 7 family of devices implement both a Cortex-A7 application processor and a Cortex-M4 embedded processor. In this session we will discuss the challenges that such a design brings to a developer, as well as how with DS-5, ARM gives you a powerful tool to address them.

Charging smartphones without the need to plug in a charging wire increases convenience and enables on-the-move charging in public spaces. First generation wireless chargers consist of over 100 components and are too expensive for mass market adoption. The NXQ1TXH5 is a one-chip Qi low power wireless charging transmitter integrating all the digital, analog and power functions for a Qi wireless charger. The high integration enables a very low component count and an easy to design wireless charger. This also reduces the cost of a wireless charger by as much as a factor 3. The NXQ1TXH5 is a real digital plug & play platform without the need for external analog design effort. A 2-layer PCB with signal & power routing at the top layer and a full copper bottom layer for thermal performance is all you need. Connect power supply and decoupling at the input and an LC circuit at the output to transmit the power to the receiver, and your wireless charger is ready to go! Watch Video Presentation

Resonant AC/DC supplies have superior efficiency at high power output. The TEA1916 is a digital controller simplifying the complexity of resonant LLC designs and providing easy tuning. It succeeds the very popular TEA1716 used in many resonant Switch Mode Power Supplies for e.g. PC's & TV's, but the TEA1916 is actually very suitable for any power supply > 75W, e.g. medical, industrial and server power supplies. The TEA1916 uses a new digital cycle-by-cycle architecture (Vcap control) to enable a new type of operation at low power loads. This increases the efficiency at low output power, using an accurately controlled burst mode operation. The TEA1916 also achieves very low power consumption in standby or off state; a key performance parameter to differentiate from competition. To obtain the highest efficiency the TEA1916 works excellent together with NXP's TEA1995 Synchronous Rectifier.

AC/DC converters need to provide a defined and safe supply voltage from AC mains, varying from 90 to 264 V AC. Key requirements are efficiency, no-load power consumption and size. A new requirement for wall chargers is communication to the mobile, enabling faster charging by changing voltage or current. Most common AC/DC topologies are flyback and resonant. A flyback converter features lowest cost, but magnetics size becomes larger at higher output power. In that case, resonant converters are preferred, although efficiency is lower at low loads. NXP has invented a resonant concept that overcomes this issue. The presentation will introduce the mentioned AC/DC technologies and NXP’s product advantages.

If you may risk a dead battery in your Smartphone, table PC, or digital smart watch, or you get tangled up with the wrong charger cord on your nightstand or office desk, the simplicity of a wire-less charger is your dream come true! But wireless chargers need a lot of technology and are not created equal. NXP's family of Transmitter and Receiver components offer solutions for both the Qi and Rezence standards. We take a look at both and offer some practical hardware solutions to cut that cord. Watch Video Presentation
