Hi NXP team,

I am currently evaluating hardware solutions for a 64 kW BLDC motor control system in a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aerospace application. The project demands high safety assurance and performance, targeting DO-178C DAL-B or higher compliance.

We are seeking a motor control IC or microcontroller solution with the following characteristics:

  • Suitable for safety-critical motor control, including DAL-B system architecture
  • Capable of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for high-power BLDC/PMSM motors
  • Support for PWM-ADC synchronization, encoder/sensor less feedback, and high-frequency switching
  • Proven or qualified RTOS/toolchain support for avionics or DO-178C environments
  • Available reference designs, libraries, or model-based development support (e.g., Simulink auto-code generation)

It would be greatly helpful if you could recommend:

  • Suitable ICs or families for this application
  • Motor control development kits or demo boards
  • Functional safety certification status or available packages
  • Toolchain or ecosystem support for aerospace-grade development
  • supporting Green Hill compiler

This information will help us align our development with safety and performance goals for our VTOL propulsion system.

Looking forward to your expert recommendation.

Thanks & regards,
Aravind R

Hi @Aravind3 ,

Thanks for your interest in NXP MIMXRT series!

The MIMXRT series, S32M2 series, and MCXN/A series should all meet your needs, and the following few resources will be helpful:

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for your reply. We require IC which integrates with DO254/AsIl-D and lockstep for motor control.

Thanks & regards,

Hi @Aravind3 ,

Sorry for the delay.

i.MX RT1170 (Auto version) isn't a ASIL rated device but QM. As a QM device, it only can be used in ASIL A/B system/application, cannot support ASIL D application. But the S32K series of MCUs for automotive use can fulfill your needs. Please check this link:
