What is the difference between esdhc and sdcard?

from the example of the sdcard with esdhc, the "esdhc" is opened first of all (so i assume this is the low-level driver) and then the SD Commands are send.

only then the "sdcard" is installed and open, and the partition manager is installed on top of it (and MFS on top of the partition manager).

Im a bit confused because i thought esdhc is the sd driver like: spi, sdhc only faster and the "sdcard" getting me confused of its goal and need.

If someone can please explain it to me i will be thankful.

Thank you.

for MMC, SD, and SDIO types of memory cards.
