Where to download CodeWarrior 3.1

In the past I once downloaded a CodeWarrior 3.1 from metrowerks.com. I used it to download Matlab simulink models to my HC12 microcontroller. I want to use the program again, but unfortunately, I have removed the program from my computer, Now that the content of the metrowerks website is transfered to the freescale website, I have no idea which version of CodeWarrior I need. I seem to remember the fileszie of the version I downloaded in the past was only a couple of tens of mb's. Can someone tell me which version to download?

OK, I have a question about this...

If I buy a 'package' with the USB-Multilink what comes with it since you no longer are going to support 3.1? I have 4 of the things, (hey, they were cheap, so I leave one at home, one at my desk, one in the shop, and one still in a sealed box in the office, just in case. I even have a friend who purchased one, just so he could do a project and be 'compatible') and they all came with 3.1SE.

On the other hand, will there be a 4.x Special Edition for people picking up new BDM pods?

All upgrade and patches will be done for V4.5. We will not generate patches for V3.1 anymore.

You can continue to use your V3.1 software if you want, but new derivatives will be supported in the new release only.

So... we might be forced to upgrade again... 4th time in 4 years. What if someone would find a bug in the 3.1 compiler that we have paid for. We would be forced to upgrade to 4.5 and then pay a lot of money for it one more time..?

CodeWarrior for HC12 V3.1 cannot be downloaded from the web any more, but you can download CodeWarrior for HCS12X V4.5.

This software supports HC12, HCS12 and HCS12X cores.

To download the software go to following URL

and click on the link CWX-H12SX-SE to download the software. It comes with a special edition license already installed. The special edition license will allow you to build up to 32K of C source code.

I want to address your concerns, but I please clarify something for me, first. I don't understand what your concerns are, exactly.

Do you want access to the CodeWarrior HC12 3.1 tools? Do you want access to the updates & patches to these tools?

Please give me a chance to fix this situation by being more specific about the problems you've encountered using these tools.

Yes! I'd like all downloads relating to previous versions of CodeWarrior to remain available on the website - even if Freescale is no longer supporting these products.

Why not? What do Freescale have to lose by making it available?

As an example of why this might be useful, if you change your office PC, then you'll need to re-install CodeWarrior. That's fine if you can locate the CD it came on, but being able to download it would make life a lot easier.

Being able to upgrade to a new version is of no use to us (and, I suspect a lot of embedded systems designers), as when we release new versions of software for existing products, we would prefer to use the same compiler throughout the life of the product. Hence even if Freescale no longer support this version of the compiler, they should at least continue to make it (and any patches) available for download.

Freescale is happy to continue to answer technical questions for CodeWarrior HC12 3.1 on this forum and through paid technical support.

To take advantage of new features and development tools for HC12, you'll have to pay for version 4.5.

If it's any consolation, Freescale includes 1 year of free support and a heavy discount for upgrades to CodeWarrior tools.

If you still feel strongly about this policy, let me know.

I just hope that I never need any new features then, because all those upgrades cost time and money, especially when you have an annoying "floating license". I would seriously concider getting a compiler from another company if I have to do it yet another time.

Perhaps I only have myself to blame for picking HCS12 when it was brand new. I won't make that mistake again... better to wait 3 years after a MCU release until all the bugs are sorted out and let somebody else pay for getting them solved.

I finally decided to browse this CodeWarrior discussion forum to see if people are very happy with what their CW license. I certainly wonder how far FSL would go to pressure customers to keep paying for upgrades. For example, it is difficult to be satisfied with the 3.1 version if you can no longer download it when your PC becomes corrupt and you need to reinstall, or when they no longer generate patches so the trivial but annoying bug will never be fixed. Sometimes I think the plan is to purposely put an annoying bug in the old version in order to compel customers to upgrade.

I'm sure glad I used GCC.

P.S. I'm not sure the spelling of "FSL" (my spell checker suggests "FOSSIL")
