When trying to open the project using CW 8.5 , following error is encounetred "CodeWarrior encountered an unhandled exception 0xe06d7363 at address 0x759cc54f. Location: KERNELBASE.dll:0x759cc54f.

Try to run with compatibility mode,

Run the app with right click and choose compatibility mode for the app.
