Hello, i'm totally newbie on programming MCU but i need a little help about FREESCALE MC9S08GT32CFB soldered in a particular Industrial electronic device that i have buyed. My goal is dump the software in EXCELSEMI ES29LV160E Flash Chip that is interfaced at FREESCALE MC9S08GT32CFB Mcu Chip for a "little" work of "menu language traduction".
What i have discovered is that i need to solder the flat cable of a programmer pod like " "PEMICRO USB HCS08/HCS12 Multilink Rev. C" on 4 point of the Freescale Chip: Pin1 (RESET), Pin 17 (VDD), Pin42 (BKGD), and finally GND (Pin??). For this kind of work i need a software like "Codewarrior v.6" or "Noice for HCS08".
Do you think i'm in the right way???

Any Help is appreciate.
Exscuse my poor English

Hi Francesco75,

How you are suggesting to connect to the GT32 is pretty much correct, However......
Are you sure the FLASH is directly connected to the GT32?
It is a very big parallel interface device and would use up all of th GT32's pins just to connect it.
If the GT32 is secured (very likely) with no backdoor access enabled (quite likely) then you have no chance.
It would seem to me that if you know the display string are actually stored in the Excelsemi device (do you?) then you would be best to try to directly read and then modify them directly there.
Also the BKGD pin has some components connected to it, this may make access difficult as well.

Many, many, thanks for reply me. I'm very happy for your help.
By the way here it is my bad thinking:

1) Unfortunately i'm not sure if the FLASH is directly connected to the GT32 but is only my suspicious...(How to program the Flash directly?? Wich, eventually, type of Programming Pod/software needed?...i need to solder/desolder the flash?:smileysad:)

2)I have just buyed an USB HCS08/HCS12 Multilink, Rev.C programming Pod, so i can start some kind of experiment but i don't have idea how to start reading/dumping.... (Wich software can i use for free?)

3)I have soldered a BGND,RESET,AND VDD Pins, but where is GND Pin??? Can i solder the GND pin directly in the PCB GND? (Look at Image i have inserted)

Thanks in advance for you time.
I appreciate a lot all the helps.

Hi Francesco.

GND is right next to VCC on pin 16.
Unless all of those pins on the right and bottom are connected under the chip I think the flash is not directly connected. Do they go anywhere?

Also still a bit concerned about what circuitry is hanging off that BKGD pin already. It may affect BDM mode. Maybe you could sketch it out.

Also getting a bit more worried about that aiding and abetting charge as well!

So my project go really bad...

I have soldered the 4 BDM Pins and with Help of my HCS08/HCS12 Multilink Rev. C Pod i have tried to do something with Codewarrior but the Yellow Led become lit only for a few second at the powering of my device with HCS08 soldered in it. So the connection become impossible to do with Codewarrior or other software like NoIce...
I'm very sad for this, but i'm totally newbie in this kind of work...so any other help is appreciate.
Many thanks to all who spend time for help me.

Hi,
It is difficult to believe that someone has designed a 9S08 board without providing some kind of contact to the BDM port.

But before you start doing anything, have you got the 8 byte security key?
If you haven't got it, there is no use in trying.
It also possible to totally remove the possibility to crack the MCU.

The CodeWarrior Special Edition software is easy to get. You will have to fill in some questions, and then download the code.

You will have to get a Cyclone from P&E or an inDART-ONE from SofTec.

Then you will have to do some soldering. The wires needed is the gnd and the BDM.

When you have done that, you have a chance of succeding.

Regards,
Ake
