Broken USB-ML-12E "BDM debugger for HC(S)08"

Hello everyone,
I hope somebody will kindly help me.

I was using a USB-ML-12E debugger. This one:

Unfortunatly, my shame, I badly connected my target board and so 24Volts (with some Amperes) have entered in the Vdd pin on the USB-ML-12E connector.

I repaired my target board (made the correct connections), but USB-ML-12E is broken

Now it doesn't work anymore, and the yellow led is always off.

Knowing the cause of the failure, is there any way to repair the debugger ?

Maybea single diode or zenere blew up.

Isn't there a schematic of the board so that I can check what got damaged with knowledge?

If the big microcontroller didn't blow up, I think it is possible to repair it.

Any suggestions ?

I assume you're talking about repairing P&E Micro's USB probe? You'd have to check with them for the schematics. Do you have another working USB probe so that you can confirm that the target board is OK, and that the problem is truely located in the damaged probe?

Hello Tom, thank you for your answer.

Yes i'm talking about repairing "P&E Micro's USB probe".

And, yes, in the lab there's another "P&E Micro's USB probe" so I could check that my target board is working correctly and it does comunicate with "P&E probe".

So the problem is truly located on the P&E probe.

Maybe there's a single component which is protecting the Vdd pin against overvoltages (like a zener or similar) and this component might be burned and now shorted to ground.

If I connect Vdd pin to +5V it drains 0.77Amps but the P&E probe doesn't detect the 5V.

Hi BV_BV,

I don't think you will have any luck obtaining circuit diagrams for this. The BDM adapters that are built in to the demoboards are always just shown as a black box on the circuits.

I have fixed several HDD's that have failed at the same time as the power supply by replacing (or even removing) the protection diode that is right behind the power connector.

If you are lucky, there might be a similar device involved here and you can trace it down yourself.

Hi peg, thank you.

I've seen behind the connector there is for sure a throu hole diode, and a small 2 pin SMD which may be a surge protector.

But my power supply was set to 24Volt and current limited to 5A, so I'm afraid that 5A was strong enough to rise everything up well over 5V (even with protections), and so it damaged the emulating micro, and other small logic ICs.

Good luck PC USB  is still ok.

Will keep you update, but I'm contemplating buying a new one, as it could be just a waste of time.
