Availability / Production of MC68HC908AB32? Has anything changed recently?

Our company uses what we think (for us at least) is a significant number of 08AB32 uCs on a range of products. Recently one of our local board stuffers commented that is not as easy as it once was to get 08AB32s.

I then checked some of the usual suspects of online semis vendors (Digikey, Mouser etc) and id does seem as though noone is actually holding stock or noone is holding more than a handful in stock.

I don't know how ive missed this info before but in Buy/Parametrics it states our model of 08AB32 as "no longer manufactured".

Can someone confirm this for me please?

It sounds like we'll have to change to another uC. We're familiar with several uCs from the s08 range and a couple from the s12 range but is there an official recommendation for moving from 08AB32 to a particular model in s08 or s12?

Our flavour of AB32 is MC68HC908AB32CFU.

Any feedback is appreciated,

Is newer part name MC908AB32 the same like MC68HC908AB32? I see MC908AB32 available at Digikey and Farnell

Yes you're absolutely right about the name change. Thanks for pointing that out.

I suspect there's very little difference between the MC68HC908AB32 and MC908AB32.

in fact MC908AB32 datasheet link just goes to the MC68HC908AB32 datasheet.

MC68HC908AB32 is "no longer manufactured" &

MC908AB32 is "not recommended for new designs"

So this probably gives us a little time.

The numbers in stock at Farnell, Digikey and elsewhere don't seem like a lot.

But maybe I shouldn't expect them to hold large numbers.

I'm checking with Arrow and Mobicon. I think theyd give me a better idea.

Hello,

I believe this part number change has occurred over the whole 08 range. It gave me a scare also! Think of how much ink and laser etching they can save! Those letters where quite superfluous.

Hello John,

The 9S08DN32 is possibly a close match to the resources of the 908AB32, including the provision of EEPROM.  However, TPM2 on the newer device has only two channels available.

Not sure of their availability through Australian distributors.

Regards,

Mac

Thanks bigmac. I think you're probably right and weve recently been using the similar S08DZ60 so that might be the go.

It looks like the timer channel options could be bent to our purposes without too much fuss.

It's a little more expensive for parts here because of o/s deliver costs and the market is not as big as elsewhere so i get the feeling we sometimes pay a bit more for having somebody stock it when it may not be a massively popular chip.

So we try to keep the range of uC we use down and use more of the same type.

I'm also considering recommending something in Coldfire V2. It'll be massive overkill for a lot of what we do but the price per piece feels similar to something like DZ60 so why not go for the chip with more features? Almost all of our products are cable powered from a p/s off the grid.

I wonder why AB32 was dropped? To be honest i came across few other people mentioning that they used it during the time that we have used it.

Still trying to find out if we can get a bunch before they disappear completely to ease any transition.
