Thread uses a secure scheme of commissioning based on the proven DTLS open standard.

Users can authorize devices onto a Thread network using smart phones, tablets, or laptops/PCs. Also, GUI rich devices within the network can be used to authorize other devices.

When a new device is about to be enrolled in a Thread network, a security session is established between the new device and the commissioning device to authenticate and to provide the required credentials.

A Thread device can still function without a link to the internet provided by a Border Router. It can communicate with any other Thread device in the network or within the extended in-premise network.
