Hi NXP Team,

I am working on the FRDM-MCXW71 board and trying to debug the mcxw71_evk_cmsis_button_toggle_led example and some BLE examples using MCUXpresso for Visual Studio Code (version 26.2.46). However, the debug session is not starting.

It shows the following error:

failed to launch: Remote connection closed
(from target select extended remote 172.0.0.1:2356)

I also tried programming the board using LinkFlash (Linkflash v25.12.83), but it shows this error:

Could not connect to core
Et:31: No connection to chip's debug port
Pc: (100) Target Operation Failed

On the hardware side, the USB_ACT green LED is ON, the ISP_EN_MLINK red LED is blinking, and the USB LED is also ON.

Earlier the board was working fine, but now I am unable to debug or flash any example.

Could you please suggest how to resolve this issue?

I have attached the screenshots for the reference. #mcxw71 #FRDMMXCW71

Hello, hope you are doing well.

Could you please confirm if you were able to build and debug any other example previous to this one? What SDK version are you using? What was the last example that you were able to run?

As you are using an example for MCXW71-EVK, could you please try importing the example for FRDM-MCXW71 labeled "frdmmcxw71_cmsis_button_toggle_led" and let me know if it works?

Best Regards,
Ana Sofia.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I am using SDK version 25.12. Earlier, the example mcxw71_evk_cmsis_button_toggle_led was working on the FRDM-MCXW71 board, and the BLE example was also working properly.
After your reply, I downloaded the FRDM-MCXW71 SDK version 25.12 again and tried to debug and run the frdmmcxw71_cmsis_button_toggle_led example. However, I am still getting the same issue:,same issue is coming
"Launching GDB server: "C:\\NXP\\LinkServer_25.12.83\\LinkServer.exe" -l5 gdbserver "MCXW716CxxxA:FRDM-MCXW71" --probe U04N4UXLTCAYZ --gdb-port 2330 --no-boot --core primary --redlink-port 2440
Please check TERMINAL tab (GDB server console) for output from "C:\NXP\LinkServer_25.12.83\LinkServer.exe"
Output radix now set to decimal 10, hex a, octal 12.
Input radix now set to decimal 10, hex a, octal 12.
Error 103: Failed to launch GDB: Remote connection closed (from target-select extended-remote 127.0.0.1:2330)" ,
Could you please help me understand how to resolve this issue?

Hello,

If an error occurs at startup, the D7 LED blinks rapidly. Could you try updating the MCU‑Link debug firmware using the procedure described in Section 3.4 Updating MCU‑Link firmware using the firmware update utility of the UM12063 FRDM‑MCXW71 Board User Manual?

You will also find the required jumper and connector settings for using MCU‑Link to debug the MCXW71 MCU in Section 3.2 Supported debug scenarios. Could you please help me verify these settings in your FRDM board, as well as that JP5 is open so that MCU‑Link can boot normally. When JP5 is shorted, MCU‑Link is forced into ISP mode and cannot follow its standard boot sequence.

Also, just to confirm, which BLE example did you run previously? Did you test any low power examples? It is also possible that the device entered a low‑power state.

Best regards,
Ana Sofia.

Hello @sofiaurueta,

1) The D7 LED is blinking at a 1-second interval. I have referred to Sections 3.4 and 3.2 of the user manual and verified the jumper and connection settings. However, the board is still not flashing using LinkFlash as well as VS Code debug. The same issue mentioned earlier persists.

I have only flashed the adv_ext_central_freertos example and the button toggle LED example. I have not flashed any low-power examples.

Could you please advise how to resolve this issue?

Hello,

Could you try to do a mass-erase? By using an "unlock kinetis" command in J-Link Commander, or a mass erase command through MCUXpresso (using the GUI Flash Tool), which works as well.

Afterwards, you could try running a hello_world or BLE example to make sure the board is working properly.

If this is not working, I would try with an external debugger.

Hope this helps.
