Hello pcarew,

Hope this email finds you well

I have been working on your case to find a solution for this situation, I'm currently waiting for an internal team validation.

Meantime I want to ask you a question:

How did you know that the processor is dead?

I will be back with you as soon as I get any update from the internal team,

Best Regards,

MPC860 device compatibility

Hello,

We're trying to repair a Tektronix TDS3054B oscilloscope and it appears that the processor is dead.
This scope uses an NXP processor the XPC860DEZP50D4

It looks like we need to replace the processor on the main board, but these processors are hard to come by now.
We have found a source for another processor in the line and wanted to ask about their "Drop-In" compatibility.

The other processor is an MPC860ENVR66D4.

My major question around the differences are:
a) Is the BGA pinout the same between the 2 devices (it looks like it might be from the orig. HW document)?

b) Would the additional features in the EN version (2 extra 10T ethernet functions and 2 extra Serial Communications Controllers) cause any disruption if not used/initialized?
The existing firmware obviously would not know or expect these. If they are not initialized/configured, would they disrupt the operation of the processor?

c) The ENC device supports a higher speed. Would this be ok being clocked at the lower DEZ speed?

Many thanks.

Paul.

Hello Hector,
Many thanks for looking into this.
The TDS3054B uses the XPC860DEZP50D4. The board that this sits on has good power rails and good clock generation. The Power On Reset Circuitry is operating as expected.

However, there is *no* CPU activity what so ever. No Address line/bus activity, no Data bus activity. Nothing that would indicate that the processor was running.

We did attempt to "Reflow" the BGA to see if it was just a solder ball issue. The reflow was a bit of a clumsy attempt and the processor was 'overheated' in the process and emitted a puff of smoke. So we definitely need to replace it.

Best Regards
Paul.

Hello pcarew,

Hope this post finds you well,

I have verified with the internal team and they inform me of the following statement:

Yes, MPC860ENVR66D4 can used as a replacement for XPC860DEZP50D4.
