I am seeking clarification regarding the dead time enforcement mechanism as described in the datasheet and the safety manual, as there appears to be a contradiction between the two documents.

The datasheet states that the gate driver introduces additional dead time on top of the dead time provided by the microcontroller on the PWM and PWMALT pins. It further explains that if the DTFLT bit in the STATUS register is asserted, this indicates additional dead time has been enforced. Consequently, when the dead time configured in the CONFIG5 register matches the dead time provided by the microcontroller, the actual dead time applied to the MOSFETs will equal the commanded dead time (which is the one introduced from micro, GD-DT and micro-DT will not be added up in this case). However, if the configured dead time in the CONFIG5 register differs from the dead time provided by the microcontroller, the DTFLT bit is asserted, and the gate driver enforces additional dead time.

In contrast, the safety manual mentions that the dead time violation circuitry detects and reports a dead time fault if the observed dead time is less than the programmed value.

These two descriptions seem to conflict with each other. Specifically, one document implies the addition of dead time, while the other suggests fault detection when the observed dead time is insufficient. Could you please clarify how these mechanisms work and whether these statements address different aspects of the functionality?

Your prompt assistance in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

This snapshot is from ds.This snapshot is from sm.

Hello Akshat,

The min_DT value programmed in the GD3162 acts as a safeguard.

In normal operation, the MCU provides a deadtime > min_DT, no additional delay is introduced by the GD and no fault is latched.

If the MCU provides a deadtime < min_DT, the GD will delay the PWM turn ON such that min_DT timing is observed.

In addition, if the DTFLT is unmasked, the GD will report a fault (while still allowing PWM operation). If DTFLT is masked, no fault will be generated, but min_DT will still be enforced.
