Hi,

I have a MC34SB0410 quad valve controller IC that I have connected to PIC18F25K80 microcontroller. I have connected an LED to low side driver 1 to check the functionality. I am going to attach a solenoid valve to it. The problem I am facing is that even when I give Write commands to the board using spi the chip is not even turning on the LED.

I wanted to ask if there is any intitialization needed to start the operations. I have given all the write commands given in the datasheet.

I am attaching the code here, it is a basic code because i just want to check the functionality.

PS: I dont have any Schematic or circuit diagram. I have connected all the spi pins correctly, PWR pin is connected to 12 V supply,DOSV and VCC5 are connected to microcontrollers 5v Supply and RSTB pin is pulled up.

Thank You

CODE:

/**
Generated Main Source File

Company:
Microchip Technology Inc.

File Name:
main.c

Summary:
This is the main file generated using PIC10 / PIC12 / PIC16 / PIC18 MCUs

Description:
This header file provides implementations for driver APIs for all modules selected in the GUI.
Generation Information :
Product Revision : PIC10 / PIC12 / PIC16 / PIC18 MCUs - 1.81.8
Device : PIC18F25K80
Driver Version : 2.00
*/

/*
(c) 2018 Microchip Technology Inc. and its subsidiaries.

Subject to your compliance with these terms, you may use Microchip software and any
derivatives exclusively with Microchip products.

Hi Sudeep,

please share a scope from the SPI communication. Please reset your device. After this you should read on the SO line 1010101010101010 message, when you try to write or read.

Please refer to the note 2. in the page 7. To which pins have you connected the LED? Have you shorted the pins with the same name together?

Please refer to the Figure 13. in the MC34SB0410 datasheet. The SCLK line must be low on idle => CPOL=0, data must be sampled on the rising CLK edge and data must be changed on falling CLK edge => CPHA=0. This results in SPI mode 0.

Dear Jozef,

Sorry but I don't have a Scope for SPI Communication.But what I have done is whenever I am sending a data and receiving data, I am storing it in a variable and the sending it to computer terminal using UART. I am observing whatever I am receiving on the terminal.

Now whenever I reset the board I get NUL(00) value on uart at the start.

And for the pin I have connected with LED is 01 and 48(LSD1) which are shorted together and I have shorted all the pins with same name.

And for SPI Mode I have configured it as per MODE 0.

SPI communication freqency is 2.7648 MHz.

I am sharing the code here so that you can have a look

CODE:

#include "mcc_generated_files/mcc.h"

/*
Main application
*/

void Write_CMD(uint8_t cmd1,uint8_t cmd2);
uint8_t Read_Data();
void main(void)
{
// Initialize the device
SYSTEM_Initialize();
unsigned char data[20];
SPI_Open(SPI_DEFAULT);
SLAVE_SetLow();
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x00,0x00);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x04,0x02);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x0C,0x00);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x10,0x23);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x14,0x03);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x98,0x07);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0xA4,0x38);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SLAVE_SetLow();
Write_CMD(0x2B,0xFF);
Read_Data();
SLAVE_SetHigh();
SPI_Close();
EUSART1_Write('E');
EUSART1_Write('\n');
while(1);
}

void Write_CMD(uint8_t cmd1,uint8_t cmd2)
{

SPI_ExchangeByte(cmd1);
SPI_ExchangeByte(cmd2);

}
uint8_t Read_Data(){
uint8_t DATA1;
uint8_t DATA2;

DATA1=SPI_ExchangeByte(0x00);
DATA2=SPI_ExchangeByte(0x00);

EUSART1_Write(DATA1);
EUSART1_Write(DATA2);
}

Thank You

Sudeep

Hi Sudeep,

I don't see anything wrong with your code. Are you reading the SO SPI line with your MCU?

When you send the first write line, what do you see on the SO line? Is it all 0's? Or do you see this message: 1010101010101010?

If all 0's, it means, the SPI communication is not working.

Please consider purchasing TWR-SB0410-36EVB.

On the EVB page is a driver, you can download it and test it with your MCU.

Dear Sudeep,

thank you for your answer. If you see all the 0's, then the SPI communication is not working. You are not able to write to the MC34SB0410 registers, nor read from them. I need to see the schematic, to check if everything is correct from hardware point, and I need to see waveforms. To check if the SPI mode and SPI timing is correct. Without this I am not able to help you. Please share the mentioned. First you need to establish the SPI communication. I understand, that these devices are quiet expensive. I apologize for inconvenience.

Dear Jozef,

Thank you for your reply, I dont have proper schematic but I am attaching a block diagram that shows what connections I have done.

For the waveform I don't have any debugging tool to observe waveform, To see the wave form I used digital oscilloscope to observe the waveform on the pins. I could see that Clock waveform was fine(16 clock cycles) attaching a photo of that too

SCLK

, and Chip select is also showing the output as expected. I can also see the wave form on MOSI line which means the data is going to MC34SB0410 Chip.I am attaching the photos of all these waveforms seperately as I only have one probe on me.

CHIP SELECT:CHIP SELECT

MASTER OUT SLAVE IN(MOSI) :

mosi 1mosi 2

This is all I can provide you riight now. I am not getting anything on MISO line, I can confirm from above waveforms that SPI Commands are going in the chip but nothing is happening.

Please look into this matter and provide me a solution.

THANK YOU

Sudeep

Dear Sudeep,

if you see nothing on the SO line, then the SPI communication is not working. The oscilloscope scopes are great. It's great, that at least the clock, CS and SI is working. But I would need to see at last two channels at the same time. CLK+MISO, CLK+MOSI and CLK+CS. To compare timings and to confirm, that the SPI mode is indeed 0. Is your oscilloscope two channel one? Or multichannel? Please contact the PIC18F25K80 manufacturer to confirm, that the SPI mode is set to 0.

Please add a pull-up resistor on the RSTB pin. 4.7kOhm should be ok.

Dear Jozef,

I am sorry for not replying you as I was sick and wasn't working on it so I didn't make any progress.

As for the waveform currently I don't have an oscilloscope with me. The above screenshot does confirm that the data is getting transmitted from MCU to MC34SB0410 chip. Can you please check the code again to see if there is anything missing from it.

I haven't connected a resistor across the RSTB pin so I will connect a resistor to it as you have mentioned and try if it works or not. I think there shouldn't be any problem even if I have connected RSTB directly to 5v.

As for the SPI mode I am using MPLABX Code configurator to configure the settings of the SPI Protocol an so here I can directly select SPI MODE 0 in here so I can confirm that SPI is working in MODE 0.

SPI MODE 0

Please check the code again and tell if I am doing anything wrong or not.

Hi Sudeep,

I apologize for a late answer. I have just now received a notification from the community about this case.

Yes, the RSTB connected directly to VCC5 should be ok, but the pull-up resistor is recommended.

Unfortunately I am not able to help you with other, than NXP components even if I want to. I don't have access to the other companies components documents, software etc. I can only support your for the NXP's MC34SB0410. For this I need to check if the external components are correct, and if the signals to the MC34SB0410 interface are within required timings. Please create a schematic. You can use for example open source Eagle CAD. For the signals, I need to see at least two of them to compare the timings. Please borrow a two channel oscilloscope and please share SCLK+MOSI, SCLK+MISO and SCLK+CS signals. Or you can use a logic analyzer for this.

With Best Regards,
