MIMXRT1170-EVK CAN communication not working

Long story short: I am suing the board mentioned above and the MBDT V1.3 to test the CAN communication. I am running the example "FCAN interrupts" but I don't get any response in my PCAN reading device.

Long story: after I tried and failed to make this work with an "EVKB" board (see [1] below), I decided to purchase an EVK board (because the toolbox was designed for it). Once again, the simple I/O examples from the MBDT worked immediately.

When I try to run the FCAN interrupts example, it does compile and flash properly. I get no response on the PCAN device connected to the board. I also disabled the "loop back self test mode" but I get no different behavior. The Flexmaster module did not work either. It shows the same error as in [1].

Is there some hardware modification I need to do on the board (apart from soldering the PINs?). A jumper or so, to make the CAN communication work?

Is there any other configuration I need to be aware of to make this work?

I am using Matlab 2019a. SDK 2.15.1., Windows 10.
