I'm getting the following error when flashing the LPC54102 SoC in a lpcXpresso board:

Cr:v LPCXpresso Free License - Download limit is 256K
Pc: ( 70) License Check Complete
Nt: Loading binary file 'lpcxpresso_demo.bin' at location 00000000
Nt: Writing 108856 bytes to address 0x00000000 in Flash
Pb: ( 0) Writing page 0 at 0x00000000 with 32768 bytes
Ec: Flash driver "EraseSector" timeout (3000 ms) PC: FFFFFFFE

Ec: Flash driver "Terminate" timeout (500 ms) PC: FFFFFFFE

Pb: (100) Writing Flash ended with an error.
Ed:06: File 'lpcxpresso_demo.bin' load failure: Ef(31): Timed-out erasing flash.
Pc: (100) Target Connection Failed

Does anybody know what causes this and how to fix it?

I suspect that the code already in flash has already put the MCU into a low power mode - please try booting the board into ISP mode, then try flashing again:

If that doesn't work, please confirm what version of LPCXpresso IDE you are using and also please provide the actual command being invoked to try to flash the board (I presume that you are using either the GUI flash programmer, or invoking from the command line):

Also, please try fitting a jumper to JP5/DFULink - which should allow the tools to soft load the latest debug probe firmware, rather than using the old version that factory programmed into some LPCXpresso54102 boards. Note you will need to do this before connecting the USB cable from your PC to the board.
