LPCexpresso / LPC Link hangs on launching application

Hello,

I have
- a LPCXpresso LPC1115 REV A LPC Link (with all strip connectors properly cut, so that I can use the LPC-Link as JTAG interface)
- an OLIMEX ARM-JTAG 20-10 adapter
- an OLIMEX LPC-P212x Board with LPC 2129
- a 7.5 Volts power supply for the LPC-P212x Board
- a PC with LPCXpresso 7.6.3_326 installed
- a small C project called "StatusAnzeige"

I can build the software, but if I try to debug it, LPCXpresso says "Launching StatusAnzeige: (xx%)" in the status bar and then it hangs, whereupon xx varies somewhere between 50% and 78%. "It hangs" means LPCXpresso shows the hourglass cursor for minutes and I have to use the taskmanager to kill the LPCXpresso application.

If I select Project > Properties > Run/Debug Settings > Edit > Debugger > Miscellaneous and select "LPC-Link (WinUSB) or RDB-Link" and then click on "Edit JTAG configuration", I get the same behaviour.

I already tried another USB cable, other USB ports (including non-USBHub ports), another OLIMEX LPC-P212x board and checked that all voltages on the OLIMEX board are ok.

When I disconnect the LPC Link's USB connector, reconnect it, start a console, go to the <LPCXpresso_install_dir>\bin\scripts and run "bootlpcxpresso winusb" (as recommended on http://support.code-red-tech.com/CodeRedWiki/LPCLinkDiagnostics), it says "Booting LPC-Link with LPCXpressoWIN.enc" and I get the USB device connection sound. If I go to LPCXpresso_install_dir>\bin then and enter "crt_emu_a7_nxp -info-target -pLPC2129 -wire=winusb -4", I get the result

So it seems, that the PC has connection with the LPC2129, but if LPCXpresso starts to download any software, it always hangs before the software was downloaded completely.

Does anyone have an advice or an idea, how I could get it to work?

Although XP isn't tested, my XP is working fine here with M3 / M0 chips :O I can't confirm this for LPC21xx, so I would recommend to test your stuff with Win7 :)

As already stated, Windows XP is no longer a supported platform.

I've just tried debugging an Olimex LPC2129 board here with LPCXpresso 7.6.2 on my Windows 7 setup with an LPC-Link. All seems to work fine.

The main things to try at this stage would be to boot the board into ISP mode (http://www.lpcware.com/content/faq/lpcxpresso/regaining-debug-access) and also to check against the troubleshooting section at the end of - http://www.lpcware.com/content/faq/lpcxpresso/booting-lpc-link

One other thing that you could try would be to change the default firmware that the LPC-Link is booted with. By default on Windows XP, 'winusb' firmware is used. But you could try using the 'hid' variant that is used on other Windows variants. To do this, disconnect the LPC-Link from your PC, and power down your board, then go to

Window - Preferences - LPCXpresso - LPC-Link options

and ensure that "Initialise LPC-Link as HID" is ticked. Then try debugging again.

Beyond that, I'm afraid that there isn't much else I can suggest.

Today I installed LPCXpresso on a Windows 7 system and there it worked much better, but far away from well. Sometimes the software was downloaded and I could do a couple of steps over the source code, but I still got a lot of "Target reported errors" messages with strange reasons. Then I saw, that there's an option called MaximumWireSpeed (under Project > Properties > Run/Debug Settings > Edit > Debugger > Target Configuration > Debug options for ... > MaximumWireSpeed) and since I changed this to 10000 (instead of leave it blank = Auto-Detect), it works quite well.

Finally I went back to my good old WinXP PC and tried the same there, but it still hangs up on launching the app. I also tried that "Initialise LPC-Link as HID", but it hang too. So I will not use the WinXP system for further LPCXpresso development.
