Linux IDE hangs initializing LPC-Link

Hi there,

I've just installed the Linux IDE on an Ubuntu 10.10 VM running on a Mac OS X VirtualBox host. I've been trying to get the Blinky example project up and running but the IDE hangs when I try and Debug the project.

When I initially plug in the LPC-Link it shows up in the VM list of USB devices as an unknown device. When I click Debug I get a message that the IDE couldn't find an LPC-Link. I then have to go back to the VM list of USB devices, which now lists an NXP LPC-Link instead of the unknown device, and select that instead. However, doing this causes the IDE to hang until I unplug the USB cable.

Any ideas?

OK, so a further update on this. I've tried installing the Windows IDE under an XP VM and have run into the same issues. However, I've managed to get a bit further down the road.

I noticed that I was getting DFU logs popping up so I'm assuming the way the IDE works is to download the LPC-Link firmware via USB DFU at run time and then it tries to re-enumerate once done. This is obviously going to fail on a VM because the new device isn't on the USB device filter list.

So the solution to that is to copy down the Vendor ID, Product ID, Revision and Serial number of the enumerated LPC-Link, close down the VM and add a specific filter for the new device. Now when you try to debug and the device re-enumerates, the VM recognises the new device and passes control to the VM.

On to the next problem. Having done all that I'm now getting the following error:

From the part ID message you are receiving...

It looks like you are trying to connect to an LPC1114/302, rather than the LPC1114/301 that theproject is configured for.

Try changing the MCU to LPC1114/302 and see if this then allows you to connect...

I've installed LPCXpresso for Linux v3.8.3. I am a little rusty with Linux so don't beat me up too bad.

It runs fine up to the point of connecting to the LPC-Link.

I've already added the LPC-Link to the USB filters in VirtualBox and it shows up in Devices->USB Devices as CodeRed Technologies LPC-Link Probe v1.1 [0100].

When I try to debug I receive:

The board is powered, connected and presumably not in use.

I posted this here because initially I was having the same problem as the thread title describes.

I've seen it and tried what it implies. Also followed sjalloc's post above about re-enumeration and filtering the USB device.

Have done the reboot stuff from another thread etc...

I can see the LPC-Link with lsusb.
My paths and directories are all correct and writable.
I think all permissions, for both user and program, are correctly set.

I forgot to mention in my last post that the board is an LPCXpresso 1769, but that shouldn't matter at this point.

If you want to have a laugh, it took me 30+ minutes to remember how to chmod the executable. :o Just a little rusty. It's all starting to come back now.:)

I have a feeling that I may have to pull an all nighter with CodeRedSupport to resolve this. Coffee is on.

I am working on figuring this out and waiting patiently for any replies or further suggestions. It is not at the top of my list.

Looks like the clue is in the very last line:

If it wasn't found, the install should have installed /usr/lib/libusb-1.0.so.0 but it looks like it is missing.

libusb-1.0.0 should be installed on Ubuntu so you should be able to create a symbolic link from /lib/libusb-1.0.so.0.0.0 to /usr/lib/libusb-1.0.so.0

After looking over the output of the commands I figured things out.

The Broken pipe occurs when the USB device switches from DFU to LPC-Link. This is not a problem, so I don't need a plumber.

It was this that was bugging me:

So I reread LPCXpressoLinux.txt and found and performed this again:

Ubuntu 9 and 10
- for 64-bit versions of this distribution, the 32-bit compatibility components must be installed. Note that without these components installed, the installation program will not run. To install these components from the command line, the following command should be executed:
sudo apt-get install linux32 ia32*

Followed by a reinstall of LPCXpresso. This also fixed the missing libusb that you mentioned.

Everything works fine now.

What I found most interesting, while troubleshooting this problem, was that I noticed systick_twinkle was being programmed into the part regardless of the error message. So I knew that the LPC-LINK was communicating. It was when the debugger was trying to initialize that the connection to the LPC-Link failed.

I know the LPC-Link is proprietary hardware, but is there a document I can read to better understand the process of how the debugger interacts with the hardware?

I still don't know why I had to run "sudo apt-get install linux32 ia32*" twice to get things working. Nothing shows amiss in the logs. I'll attribute this to probable OE.
