NMI vs NVIC

When I want to create a timer interrupt, I can do it the usual way:

NVIC_EnableIRQ(CT16B1_IRQn);

Or through NMI:

NMI_Init( CT16B1_IRQn );

Can anyone explain the difference in behaviour between NMI interrupts and NVIC interrupts? Why should I choose one above the other?
