I haven't found great resources on getting non-yocto variants up and running with all of the graphics support.

I have setup debootstrap images for Jessie and have them running with the 3.10.35 Beta FSL Kernel on my imx6 board. Its probably best if you get the kernel from FSL and then do something debootstrap. Once that is setup there are references for installing the necessary FSL support packages. I have trouble getting X11 and Graphics accelerations working together outside of Yocto though.

What are the preferred steps todo that?

thanks a lot and

best regards, rainer
