Hello,

I would appreciate a definitive answer regarding the licensing and usage of the GPU and NPU on the i.MX 95 processors.

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) License & Performance:

Does the GPU in the i.MX 95 operate to its fullest potential with 3D graphics in its "out-of-the-box" state? Specifically, is it ready to handle 3D graphics right away, or is there a need for any additional licenses, configurations, or performance unlocks to access its full capabilities?

Are all necessary libraries and drivers to use the GPU (e.g., OpenGL ES, Vulkan) provided openly, or are there any proprietary restrictions or third-party licensing requirements that I should be aware of to fully utilize the GPU for high-performance 3D graphics applications?

NPU (Neural Processing Unit) License & Software:

Similarly, is there any specific licensing required to access the NPU, or are all software resources (such as machine learning frameworks) provided without additional licensing costs?

Additionally, if no licenses are required, could you point me to examples, tutorials, or software modules that demonstrate how to fully utilize both the GPU and NPU for development?

Thank you for your assistance. It is crucial for me to understand any potential licensing or software limitations upfront to ensure full compliance and smooth integration into our development process.

Best regards

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. However, my main question is about the actual use and performance of the hardware GPU on the i.MX 95 and in this case i.mx 8x, particularly regarding whether it operates with full hardware acceleration for 3D graphics tasks.

In your response, you noted that no licenses are required, but my concern is more about the GPU’s practical utilization in its default configuration. Specifically, I’d like to confirm if the GPU can handle high-performance 3D graphics (e.g., OpenGL ES, Vulkan) with full hardware acceleration, or if it relies on software emulation through libraries like Mesa, as indicated in the manual.

I’ve attached a screenshot from the manual, which states that OpenVG is emulated via the Mesa 3D library. This raises concerns about potential limitations in GPU hardware acceleration. Could you please clarify:

Hardware Acceleration for 3D Graphics: Does the GPU utilize its full hardware capabilities for rendering 3D graphics, or does it rely on software emulation that might limit performance? If additional configurations are required, could you specify these steps?

Availability of Drivers and Libraries: Are the required drivers and libraries for full GPU performance openly available, or are there proprietary or licensing restrictions I should be aware of?

NPU Software Access: As with the GPU, is the NPU fully accessible for machine learning tasks without additional licensing or specific setup requirements?

This clarification would be greatly helpful to ensure we have a clear understanding of any potential limitations or setup requirements for both the GPU and NPU.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

Hello,

1) The GPU is full supported on hardware when you run a 3D image, you can see the demos on OpenGL and OpenVG that came in your BSP.

2) No, the software driver are restricted since it is proprietary module.

3) No license requiere for NPU, and machine learning can be accessed whit the eIQ development.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your response and clarification on the GPU and NPU capabilities. I appreciate the information regarding full hardware support for 3D graphics and the availability of the demos in the BSP. It helps to know that the NPU doesn't require any additional licensing and can be accessed via eIQ for machine learning tasks.

However, the note about the restricted software drivers for the GPU due to proprietary limitations is helpful, and I’ll consider that in my planning.

Once again, thank you for your assistance and for helping to clear things up!

Best regards
