&lt;P&gt;The boxes ([]) you're seeing indicate missing fonts. You need to add a font package that supports Japanese characters.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;You can try to add to the local.conf:&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;LI-CODE lang="markup"&gt;IMAGE_INSTALL_append = " noto-cjk ttf-droid"&lt;/LI-CODE&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;Noto CJK fonts provide good coverage for Japanese.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;LI-CODE lang="markup"&gt;IMAGE_INSTALL_append = " fcitx fcitx-mozc"
IMAGE_INSTALL_append = " ibus ibus-anthy"&lt;/LI-CODE&gt;&lt;LI-CODE lang="markup"&gt;IMAGE_LINGUAS_append = " ja_JP"
