We would like to use the strobe/flash function for the ov5640 camera with Android on the imx8mm board.

This is supported in Linux with a patch to add the v4l2 flash subdev: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-media/msg175171.html

However, the camera code in vendor/nxp-opensource/imx does not appear to query the flash subdevs. Is there an existing patch to enable this function?

The Documentation doesn't mention anything about that feature, but you can try to implement that feature on Android.
