i.mx28 nand boot

Hi,

I use i.mx28 evk. And I have to boot from nand. I did steps from 5.1.3.2 nand boot header on linux_bsp_ug.pdf

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd0

kobs-ng init /boot/imx28_ivt_linux.sb

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd1

nandwrite /dev/mtd1 /boot/rootfs.jffs2

I set boot mode select 01001 for nand boot. I press KEY1 for nand rootfs while starting. Linux begins from nand but linux cannot mount rootfs. If I don't press KEY1, linux(from nand) mounts rootfs on sd card.

I have changed alternative cmd line 1 from;

noinitrd console=ttyAM0,115200 ubi.mtd=1 root=ubi0:rootfs0 rootfstype=ubifsrw gpmi

to;

noinitrd console=ttyAM0,115200 root=/dev/mtdblock1 rootfstype=jffs2

But nothing has been changed.

What can I do for boot from nand?

Thanks, I did it. There is no need about this issue. But I will need a few support. We have just started the project. And there is not enough time. It is good to know possibility of chat with FS Support.

Hi Mehmet,

When you changed the cmd line 1, did you follow the instructions in section 5.1.2 to rebuild the boot stream image? Is that new rebuilt boot stream image your imx28_ivt_linux.sb file? In your post you put the modification to the command line after burning the boot stream image. Just want to make sure that you actually burned it after you rebuilt and copied to your MMC boot directory.

I have been trying to get this to work myself for the last two days with no success.

I followed the same document directions, as well as contacting support, still with no success.

I also only was able to get the NAND boot to access the rootfs on the SD card, so we must be doing the same thing.

I am going to contact my local FAE for some help here.

If/when I get the answer I will post the correct procedure in a reply to this discussion.

I have changed first alternative cmdline in package list like below

"noinitrd console=ttyAM0,115200 root=/dev/mtdblock1 rootfstype=jffs2 gpmi"

then;

./ltib

./ltib -p boot_stream.spec -f

I have used imx28_ivt_linux.sb (I don't know why but I couldn't run imx28_linux.sb) and rootfs.jffs2. I have copied them to my sdcard on pc.

I have booted with sdcard and;

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd0

kobs-ng init /boot/imx28_ivt_linux.sb

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd1

nandwrite /dev/mtd1 /boot/rootfs.jffs2

restart board and push KEY1 while booting. In my system that is ok. I hope, that helps to you.

Mehmet, great news you have it working! The ivt file is HAB enabled, while the other file is not. The 28 board comes HAB enabled by default.

I got to the same conclusion as you did late yesterday regarding the correct command line for booting a JFFS2 rootfs.

I think the document was misleading in that it also showed the command line for a UBIFS in the same section as the notes for JFFS2.

One remaining issue I am experiencing though is when the kernel starts to access the rootfs, I get a bunch of these error messages:

"empty flash at 0x0000fffc ends at 0x00010000"

with incrementing values, maybe about 30 to 40 of these, then they stop and it continues to boot correctly.

Anybody know what's going on here?

I had used 256MB nand yesterday and there was no error. But today I use 1GB nand and I got same error too.

"empty flash at 0x0000fffc ends at ....."

I think it is about flash size. We can try changing erase size. For 256MB nand I had changed to 128K. Now I will look for new nand's block size.

If I find good news, I will write.

Robert,

I have checked block size of my new nand. It is 256K. I have changed "jffs2 erase block size to 256" in options on Target Image generation.

And retry with new rootfs.jffs2. Now I don't get "empty flash ...." but there is another problem for me. I got below error. I think it is bigger problem;

mtd->read(0x74 bytes from 0x645f8c) returned ECC error
mtd->read(0x758 bytes from 0x6458a8) returned ECC error
JFFS2 notice: (2009) read_dnode: wrong data CRC in data node at 0x006458a8: read 0x605b1d36, calculated 0x73ae93ea.
mtd->read(0xa6 bytes from 0x645800) returned ECC error
JFFS2 warning: (2009) jffs2_do_read_inode_internal: Truncating ino #1474 to 7430 bytes failed because it only had 4096 bytes to start with!
mtd->read(0x184 bytes from 0x645e7c) returned ECC error

Thank you for the help on the JFFS2 settings.

I am also getting the same kind of ECC errors.

FYI: I am using a 1Gbit NAND part ( see attached )

Do you have a data sheet for the part you are using?

If so, if you wouldnt mind attaching, I'd like to compare between them to see how they both behave.

Could yield some good ideas.

I will modify my ltib JFFS2 config settings and see how that goes.

I believe I have resolved both error issues,

based on your suggestions:

I modified the erase block size to 128k, and the page size to 2048 + 64 in the JFFS2 configuration in ltib. ( see my previously attached data sheet ref NANDD01GW3B2B for comparison with your Flash.

I no longer get either the ECC errors nor the "empty..." errors.

Roger, I think I coudln't notice error "empty flash at 0x0000fffc ends at ...." I have attached datasheet of old flash(1Gb). It is ok. I couldn't find datasheet of new flash(8Gb). If I find I will send. And If I resolve problem I will inform you. Thanks. Mehmet

I have changed erase block size to 256K and page size to 2048. But I still get same errors.

My nand size is 8Gb. Maybe it is about it.

I need to create new partitions. But I couldn't success. I have added new partitions to cmdlines;

"mtdparts=gpmi-nfc-main:32m(kernel),256m(rootfs),256m(ekent),256m(adam),-(storage)"

I checked with "cat /proc/mtd", but there was no changes

mtd0: 01400000 00040000 "gpmi-nfc-0-boot"

mtd0: 3ec00000 00040000 "gpmi-nfc-0-boot"

I missed an important problem regarding the ECC errors:

It is true that after Flashing the NAND with the rootfs.jffs, the first time I boot the board, no errors are there.

However, I missed that if I reboot the board, new ECC errors show up, as if the board was writing some data to the file system and the write caused errors.

I havent been able to find a solution for this, and I know this is not happening with SD boot with a rootfs.ext formatted root file system on the SD card.

Something is not working either with the error correction or the settings for JFFS2.

I am going to ask Freescale support for the configuration settings data they used to verify/test the BSP with the Samsung K9LBG08U0D NAND they used.

Hopefully I can use this as a guide to correctly configuring the kernel for my particular NAND.

It is interesting, there is no problem with 2Gb nand(mt29f2g08aad). I don't understand. There issues are basic steps. How can we confront these problems on any evk. Whereas I have to do a lot of work about project.

working with lcd and touchscreen

I don't know how I overcome these problems for a few days. :(

I will ask to freescale too. If I get any answer I will write you.

Interesting how close our goals are -

I also am going to be tackling getting Qt to run on the touchscreen,

and figuring out new mtd partitions as well.

I wish you the best of luck in getting all that going in a few days!

Regarding Qt, you will need to have a compiler for building native QT applications on ARM-9. Not sure if that is easy to do or included with the ltib BSP.

Regarding your mt29f2... NAND success - great!

What did you specify for the page size and erase block size?

Do you have the GPMI NAND Flash driver selected in the kernel config? ( This is in drivers/mtd/NAND device support )

As an experiment, I tried switching to a .ext3 formatted root filesystem instead of JFFS2.

There were no ECC errors at all even after doing a successful edit of the etc/rc.conf file to modify my IP address.

After rebooting, no errors were printed out and the file change was correct.

Additional reboots confirmed all was working correctly.

I'm not sure what this all means other than the settings within the JFFS2 must be the problem.

That is good, we will work together. And we have to overcome these problems.

I have used erase size 128K, page size 2K for mt29f2. I got a mail from freescale. It doesn't help me or I couldn't understand. It's 01:00 o'clock in my country. I need sleeping.
