How to open .img file

On nxp website, I have downloaded the android image

android_o8.1.0_1.4.0_7ulp-ga_tools.tar.gz

and from there, I run script

mfgtool2-android-mx7ulp-evk-sd.vbs

To load the android image to the SD card.

I disagree with some functionality of recovery which I do not like to discuss. I just want to open the image file and change its recovery partition.
The loaded image file is

imx7ulp_m4_demo.img

But, I have no idea how to open this image file.

How is this format architected and what software should I use to open it?

Here from your query, it seems that you want to change something in the recovery partition of Android. But the file you are mentioning imx7ulp_m4_demo.img does not contain the information anything regarding recovery. You will get the more idea about android partition from this link.

If you want to change in recovery partition then you need to have the i.MX7ULP android source.

You can not open this file, as Shivani told you need change the source code if you want to do change in recovery mode.
