i'm using the i.MX RT 1060 SDK along with the iw416, and when I load the evkmimxrt1060_wifi_webconfig example, with:

#define WIFI_IW416_BOARD_AW_AM457_USD

set in app_config.h. the project builds, loads on to my 1060 EVK, and I'm able to connect to it using my smart phone.

however, the signal strength of the AP is very weak. Only 1-2 bars when extremely close, and unusable when more than 5 ft away.

is there a way to increase the power or range?

Hi,

Just to confirm, did you connect the respective antenna for the Wi-Fi Tx/Rx in the AW-AM457-uSD module?

yes. this particular module has a built in trace antenna.

Could you please take a look to AN12918 available in the following route of your SDK bundle?

C:/…/SDK_2_12_0_EVK-MIMXRT1060\docs\wireless\Wi-Fi

There might be some Tx power configuration missing and this document might help you.
