Hi

The M5223X is available in 112 and 80 pin LQFP housings which are 'almost' compatible with the NE64 (without extrenal memory interface).
The main differences are due to JTAG and BDM which are different in the two devices.
It is therefore not possible to take a NE64 board and solder a M5223X in since its BDM interface requires a mod. but a NE64 board can be very easily modified to 'upgrade' to the ColdFire.

See also the following postings showing how the uTasker (operating system with integrated TCP/IP stack and chip simulator) supports both NE64 and M5223X, enabling NE64 projects to be rebuilt of the M5223X by simply changing a compiler setting.
http://forums.freescale.com/freescale/board/message?board.id=16BITCOMM&message.id=897
http://forums.freescale.com/freescale/board/message?board.id=CFCOMM&message.id=274

Note that the uTasker now supports also CAN for the M5223X - see following doc:
http://www.mjbc.ch/documents/uTasker/uTaskerCAN.PDF

The ColdFire evaluation boards are delivered with the USB ColdFire MULTILINK P&E with a 26 pin connector. If you buy the M52233DEMO costing $99 from freescale it includes the same BDM integrated into the board and also a 128k limited version of CodeWarrior.

Since the NE64 uses a two wire BDM it is probable that your present BDM is not the same but maybe it does work with the correct connector(?).

Regards

Mark Butcher
www.mjbc.ch

I heard someone say there is a Coldfire drop in replacement for this NE64, is that true?

I know I'll need a new tool chain to code for it... if I did such a thing can I debug it using the same BDM module I've been using? (USB MultiLink by P&e)

Thanks.
