i.MX6Q - is there a CPU performance hit with LPDDR2 vs. DDR3?

Hello:

Presently we are using DDR3 memory on our i.MX6 design.  We are using the iMX6Q running at 528MHz, The memory interface is 64 bits wide.

If we were to change this to LPDDR2 (at the same clock speed), are there any drawbacks on processor bandwidth, performance, etc.?

The LPDDR2 operates at 1.2V instead of 1.5V so it would be a substantial power savings for our application which can be portable or battery powered temporarily.

Any feedback or input is welcomed and appreciated!

Thanks!

Paul

Hello,

Theoretical peak DDR bandwidth under the same conditions (data bus width,
frequency) is the same for DDR3 and LPDDR2. Note, i.MX 6Solo/6DualLite supports
LPDDR2 up to 400 MHz. As for power consumption, You are right - LPDDR2 is more
preferable here.

The following may be useful regarding MX6Q / LPDDR2 design implementation.

Have a great day,
