Hi

I'm using IMX6 Quad processor.

What is the major advantages or disadvantages using External clock source instead internal Oscillator with crystal design.

If power consumption or internal oscillator is the big issue, Can you provide the details about it.

Thanks

Raju

First, the following general considerations may be helpful.

http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-oscillator-and-crystal4/

Next, the following items may be considered when comparing real / available crystals and oscillators :

1.

Cost. Crystals usually are cheaper.

2.

Package Size. It depends on real considered parts.

3.

Start-up time. It depends on real considered parts.

4.

Additional pins, elements.

Crystals require extra circuitry (capacitors), that can affect the frequency accuracy and stability.

Oscillators require power voltage (and GND), but their accuracy and stability are specified.

5.

Drive Level – when using an external oscillator its signal level should match

input specs of processor. No need for such considerations for crystal.

Thanks Yuri

The main concern i have is Jitter of 24MHz clock to IMX6.

Currently I'm using SiLAB clock generator IC.

It is very hard to find ~1.1V , 24MHz clock generator IC. So ended up using potential divider to bring down to 1.1V.

This causing big difference in Jitter.

I'm planning going back to internal oscillator of IMX6. But what i heard is , internal oscillator is power hungry.

I'm looking for specific details of power consumption.
