LS1028ARDB Deploying BSP images using removable storage

I'm working through the Layerscape LS1028A BSP User Guide, Rev. 0.3, 04/2019, section 3.1.4.2 Option 1 - Deploy LS1028A BSP images using removable storage device . There are what appear to be some errors in this section, which I've detailed in another post.(https://community.nxp.com/thread/514671)

I've built two such bootable removable SD cards. Both came with the Layerscape units that I bought, and both are Kingston brand Canvas Select 16 GB cards (SDS/16GB). I've had no problems reading and writing from them from my Ubuntu host PC. But every time I boot from them on the Layerscape box, there are the following I/O errors:

print_req_error: I/O error, dev mmcblk0 sector 1228801

Buffer I/O error on dev mmcblk0p2, logical block 131072, lost sync page write

The sector number will vary, the logical block number will vary, the device might be mmcblk0p3, and sometimes it says "lost async page write" instead of "lost sync page write".

Sometimes there is an accompanying filesystem error:

JBD2: Error -5 detected when updating journal superblock for mmcblk0ps-8

Aborting journal on device mmcblk0p2-8.

The referenced device will vary.

These errors will either cause the system boot up process to dump into emergency / maintenance mode, or other times it seems to boot correctly but then the root filesystem gets marked readonly. They have never booted up without these I/O and journal errors, which will continue at random intervals after boot.

We have had no issue with reads or writes on these SD cards under the Ubuntu host PC or on another Windows PC. We have even reformatted one of the cards with the SD Associaton's official Formatter Tool (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/). Nothing else has had any issue with reading or writing these cards.

I do have four more cards (because we bought six total Layerscape LS1028ARDB boards and got one card with each). Is it worth my time to try out every one to find one that works with these boards? I am getting the feeling that the LS1028ARDB is a very new product, and that the documentation and perhaps the software are not ready for prime time. My suspicion is that the problem lies in the MMC driver software, although I assume that since these cards came with the units, they are expected to be compatible.

The output of uname -a on the system that I've built is Linux localhost 4.14.47 #1 SMP PREEMPTY Tue Apr 16 22:18:43 CST 2019 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux.

I am simultaneously working through section 3.1.4.3 Option 2 - Deploy BSP images directly to the storage device on a board.but as described in yet another forum post (https://community.nxp.com/thread/514775), I've encountered roadblocks there as well.

Incidentally, all these cards arrived with stickers on the back that say "BSP 0.1-pre" on them. The two I have looked at were formatted and had empty filesystems, however.

Thanks for your reply, Yiping,

I will add the console logs you've requested as separate replies. Here's a summary of what happened.

(host-console-flex-installer.txt) I ran the flex-installer command on my host PC successfully. I had to provide a relative path to the rootfs image, and the SD card device on my host PC is /dev/sdc because I used an SD card reader/writer. When finished I showed the partitions and contents of each.

(target-console-uboot-first-hung.log) I placed the SD card into the LS1028ARDB unit and interrupted the boot. I ran the "load mmc..." command and got an error as you'll see in the log. I carried on and ran the remaining uboot commands, including the "mmc write..." command. When I entered the qixis_reset sd command, the system was unresponsive. I waited 5 minutes before shutting down the unit to remove the card.

(host-console-after-uboot-first-hung.txt) I put the card back into the Host PC to look at it. Note that the first partition got corrupted and no longer mounts, but the second and third are fine. I assume this is due to the failures of the "load mmc..." command followed by the "mmc write..." command.

Please note that I already have a workaround for the "load mmc..." failure, and when using it I am able to boot my Ubuntu rootfs, and that is when I get the mmc device and JBD2 errors that I have reported in the original post of this thread.

My workaround is that when I run flex-installer, I add "-f firmware_ls1028ardb_uboot_sdboot.img" to the command line. I've since found out from Pavel Chubakov that I can also just use the command "sudo dd if=firmware...img of=/dev/sdc bs=512 seek=8" if I've already run the installer without the "-f" flag. So I recreated the SD card this way, but did not capture a log of that process.

(target-console-succesful-boot-io-errors.log) Then I put the re-imaged SDcard into the unit, rebooted, and stopped the boot. I typed the following uboot commands: mmc rescan; mmc dev 0; qixis_reset sd; This booted the MMC device 0 but as you can see at the end, there were the I/O errors as I described in my post above.

In previous attempts, sometimes the boot will get as far as attempting to start Services but then fails into a Ubuntu's Emergency/Maintenance mode, but this time it looks like there was an I/O error so early in boot that the services were not attempted, and the kernel just remounted the root as readonly and dropped me into a shell.

I'm beginning to think that my SD cards are just bad. I have 6 units all together, therefore 6 cards. Two cards are bad. I will try the rest.

It seems that image firmware_ls1028ardb_uboot_sdboot.img are not put in the second partition of SD card.

I agree that firmware is no being put in the second or any other partition of the SD card. I have already worked around that problem. I believe that the instructions you gave me in your first reply to this thread, which are the same from the Quick Start guide, are incorrect. Others have come to this conclusion as well.( https://community.nxp.com/message/1222653, https://community.nxp.com/thread/514671#comment-1216868)

I listed the workaround above in an earlier reply. I will copy it here:

I have also laid out the correction to all the errors in the User Guide as I understand them so far in this post. When following those instructions, I am able to boot into the Ubuntu rootfs that I made, but get additional errors, which are at the beginning of this very thread, and which I will copy here:

Do you have this board? Are you able to run the commands to verify whether the Quick Start instructions as printed in version 0.3 of the User Guide are wrong? Can you confirm that my workaround / corrections are right? And when all that is done, can you help me figure out why I'm getting the I/O errors and read-only filesystem?

Thank you.

Hello Jeremy Impson,

Please execute the following commands

$ flex-installer -i install -b bootpartition_arm64_lts_<version>.tgz -r rootfs_ubuntu_bionic_arm64_<timestamp>.tgz -d /dev/mmcblk0

Under u-boot

=> load mmc 0:2 a0000000 firmware_ls1028ardb_uboot_sdboot.img

=> mmc rescan; mmc dev 0; mmc write a0000000 8 0x25000
=> qixis_reset sd

Would you please provide console log executing above commands?

Would you please provide detailed console log on the target board?
