SSD boot on iMX8

According to the Reference Manual, it supports below boot devices:

• SD/MMC
• NAND flash
• FlexSPI NOR flash (on FlexSPI0)
• Serial downloader support on USB 2.0 OTG and USB 3.0 (as 2.0)

It seems that there is no boot for SSD (SATA or PCIe).

On the contrary, iMX6 Sabre AI seems to support booting on SATA hard drive per mentioned in https://community.nxp.com/docs/DOC-328196

Due to cost issue, we really want to remove the eMMC and boot from SSD directly.

Is there any way we can do that?

Thank you.

Did you ever find a solution to this? I am running into the same problem.

Hi Motti

from other unsupported devices one can use plugin method (first boot from supported

device) described in sect.6.1.7 Plugin image i.MX8M Reference Manual.

Unfortunately there is no way to add boot option from SSD directly, as boot

sequence is hardcoded in ROM.

Best regards
igor
